Students from our class, along with Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Coenen's class, were treated to a special visitor today, Abraham Lincoln! Our historians have been learning about the Civil War in Social Studies, and getting a firsthand account from one of the most influential people in our history was great. Funny how on mustache day, one of the most famous bearded men would pay us a visit :)

Families,
A permission slip will be coming home with your child tonight, February 19th. This form asks for your permission for your child to be videotaped as a part of the coursework for our student teacher, Miss Scoles. You likely signed a digital permission slip during registration via Skyward, but please sign this in addition as it is needed for Miss Scoles' records and is a requirement of her preparation to becoming a teacher. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. 5th Grade Parents,
The Farnsworth Middle School counselors visited our classroom today to introduce students to course selection available at the middle school next year. Your child will be bringing home several documents that will need to be completed by Monday, February 19th. The first green document is the course selection document where you will need to fill out with your child. The top part is general information that your child should have already begun filling out with their name and 5th grade school. The bottom portion is for the electives that your child has the option of taking. Please make sure that you check either the left side (your child has elected to continue year-long band or strings) OR the right side (music elective). If you and your child elect to continue band or strings, the white sheet needs to be completed as well and returned with the green sheet. The last green sheet (stapled) is a description of the courses available at Farnsworth and does not need to be returned. 5th graders will be taking a short field trip to visit the middle schools in May, and the counselors will be back to discuss Jumpstart, which is a summer school course to introduce the incoming fifth graders to life as a middle schooler. If you or your child have any questions when filling out the course selection sheet, please send me a quick note and I will get an answer to you. -Our classroom will have a short Valentine’s Day party next Wednesday, February 14th from 1:40-2:10. If you child elects to participate, please make sure that they have a valentine for every child in our class (class list is below and can be torn off to keep). Your child should also have a means for collecting the Valentines, whether that is a bag or a box (decorating optional). Also, treats are optional, so if you would like to send a treat with your child, please feel free to do so. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Below is a class list:

During this week, classrooms will be coming up with a CREATIVE country name for the class Students will then design and create a flag for the “country”. The students chose "Chatty Cathy's" for our classroom country name and are already in the process of designing the flag. Friday, Feb. 9th at 10:00 - Opening Ceremonies in the gym & wear Red, White and Blue Day: One representative from the class will be the flag carrier. During the opening ceremony, the flags will parade in and then be hung on the wall of the gym. Students will then get a brief history of the Winter Olympics and the opening ceremony which will be on TV later that night. Each grade level will be introduced to their behavioral focus during our PBIS Olympic Booster and told that each grade level will be preparing a 5 minute presentation to be given during our closing ceremony. The focus for Room #209 will be on Respecting All Adults. Feb. 12th - 26th - Gold Medals : Teachers will be given a pad of 50 Gold Medals to be handed out during our Olympics. Teachers may give them to any class that they observe following our PBIS expectations in our ALL SCHOOL areas (Hallway behaviors, lunchroom behavior, playground and lining up.) This is a team medal, not an individual event. Classroom teachers will be in charge of collecting their gold medals and hanging them under their flag at the end of each day so that we can keep a medal count and announce our progress throughout our booster to keep the kids excited. Each medal will count as 1 minute of a class activity/movement time. If your class earns 20 medals, you will have 20 minutes. This time is not to exceed 30 minutes. (More on this below.) Feb. 12th - 26th - Cool Tools: Each grade level will be focusing on different Cool Tools during this time. Again, our focus is on Respecting All Adults. Each grade level will be responsible for sharing their Cool Tools and what they learned with the rest of the school at our Closing Ceremonies on February 26th. This will be a 5 minute presentation, either teacher or student led. It will be a short video, a power-point, a poster, a poem or chant. Feb. 26th at 2:30- 3:30 - Closing Ceremony & Wear Red, White and Blue day: At our closing ceremony, we will have each grade level share their 5 minute presentation of their Cool Tool and what they have learned. We will then be handing out awards for the medals earned during our booster. We will then have classes “retire” their flags and we will lower the Olympic flag, as they did the night before during the Winter Olympics. Students will be encouraged to continue following our behavioral expectations throughout the rest of the year. Feb. 27th - Movement Celebration: Each classroom teacher will set aside some celebration/movement time with your class. The amount of time set aside will be based upon the number of medals your class earned, not to exceed 30 minutes. During this movement time, classes may go outside for an extra recess, take a walk around the school or on the walking trail, spend time on Go Noodle or other websites that get kids up and moving. |
