Families,
Thank you to everyone, families and students, for being flexible during my paternity leave. Overall, it sounds like things went great, and the students were very active learners, as always. Just wanted to keep you updated on some odds and ends as we enter May. First of all, the May Newsletter has been uploaded, so please check that out to get a glimpse of what May has in store for our learning community. 5th Grade Recognition: Thank you to those who attended the first committee meeting last week. We have a great start on planning the event. If anyone is still interested in helping out, please let me know. The baby picture was due on April 27th. If you have not sent that in, please do so ASAP, as this is a vital piece of the final presentation during the recognition ceremony. Students will also be bringing home some art work to do that will hang during the event. Please look for that in the coming weeks. May Testing: While the FORWARD Exam has wrapped up, there are still some summative assessments that your child will be taking this month to assess their growth, as well as their response to instruction in both reading and math. Students will take the STAR 360 test, an online test in both reading and math, during the week of May 14th. As is the case with all assessments, students should get plenty of rest the night before, as well as a healthy breakfast the day of the test. Students will also take the Fountas and Pinnell Reading Test individually with me to assess their fluency and comprehension in reading. This will take place over several weeks starting the week of May 7th. Field Trips: Due to some funding issues, there has been a change to the Sports Day Field Trip. I apologize, but the 4th graders will be staying back at Jackson this day, while the 5th graders participate in the Sports Day Event. For those of you who purchased a Jackson T-Shirt, please hang on to that for next year, as we will use the same t-shirts for Sports Day next year. If you have questions or concerns regarding this change, please let me know. Also, the 5th graders will be taking a brief field trip to South High School for a Gym Field Trip on 5/22/18. This is a new field trip this year thanks to Mr. Herber and his efforts to promote healthy living throughout the Sheboygan Area School District. No School Days: There will be no school on Friday, May 25th and Monday, May 28th. Thank you, Mr. Krause

Caleb Leo Krause was born last Wednesday, April 18th at 12:53pm at 8lbs 7oz. He is a happy and healthy baby, and his big brothers love having a new baby around. Below is a picture of all the boys a few days old in the same outfit.
Good Evening Families,
I am writing to inform you that I will be out on paternity leave starting tomorrow, Wednesday April 18th, and returning Thursday May 3rd. Mrs. Joy Perna will be my substitute during this time. Please know that your child is in good hands with Mrs. Perna as she is familiar with our classroom procedures and routines, and I have left her detailed sub plans to continue to cover the important material necessary for your child to be ready for the next grade. Please know that I will continue to have access to email and if you should have any questions or concerns, to please not hesitate to contact me. Thank you, Mr. Krause We have shifted from learning about the major wars in Social Studies, to finish our Science units. The scientists in Room #209 have started to learn about the Earth's systems that work together to make our world what it is. Today, we talked about the different "spheres" that coexist to make our Earth inhabitable. Those spheres are the Geosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere. Just like scientists, we have started to keep Evidence Notebooks of our learning, and below are some examples of students responding to the prompt, "Name an example from your neighborhood that belongs to the different 'spheres'."
Families,
Our classroom will begin FORWARD testing next week. This is the test all 3-8 grade students statewide take annually in Reading and Math. In addition to Reading and Math, all 4th grade students will have two tests in Science and Social Studies each. Below is our schedule for testing: Monday April 9th- ALL Reading Sections (4) Tuesday April 10th- ALL Math Sections (2) Friday April 13th- 4th Graders Science Session 1 during Music Monday April 16th- 4th Graders Science Session 2 Tuesday April 17th-4th Graders Social Studies Session 1 Wednesday April 18th-4th Graders Social Studies Session 2 during Music Please note that while the 4th graders are missing Music, Mrs. Gliem will be using that time to rehearse 5th Grade Recognition songs with the 5th graders. On these days of testing, it is very important that students eat a healthy breakfast, and get plenty of sleep the night before. These tests are important to your child's growth in school, and by taking these simple steps, your child will be better prepared. Throughout the past few weeks, we have been learning about some important test taking strategies that will also help your child do their best on this and any other test. They are: 1) Be Prepared 2) Reframe your thinking about tests 3) Good listeners stop, look, and listen 4) Tests are not meant to be scary 5) Study day-by-day (don't cram the night before) 6) Watch the time 7) Relax with deep breathing 8) Think positive thoughts 9) Prepare your body with nutritious foods, regular exercise, and adequate rest 10) Read carefully, answer easy ones first, and CHECK OVER YOUR WORK One additional note: there is a listening session during the Reading section of the test. Please make sure you send a pair of headphones with your child next Monday, if they don't already have a pair here at school. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask. Mr, Krause :) |
